Waste Management & Recyling

- Conventional septic system and leaching bed for household waste

- Geothermal heating & cooling system does not produce any emissions

- High-efficiency fireplace burns and re-burns over 90% of material

- Kitchen and garden waste is composted and used in our organic gardens

- Chickens, ducks and worms help turn our kitchen and garden waste into nutrient-rich compost

- Bottles, cans, paper and plastic is recycled via the City of Ottawa’s recycling program

- Canvas bags used when shopping to eliminate the need for paper or plastic bags

- We avoid buying products that are “over packaged”

- We built a large 30’x72’ cover-all structure for hay storage and shelter for the sheep. These buildings use a minimum of materials and provide healthy, ventilated living quarters for livestock.

- Two century-old log barns were restored, making use of existing cut timber and sheet metal

- Old “farm junk” was removed from the property. Where possible, items were recycled, and old steel items were sold to a scrap yard for recycling
